PYGMY RHINO
Rhinoceros beetle (Oryctes nasicornis) is a tiny little one comparing
to a real rhino. However, it is a giant in the insect world.
With the size of 20-40mm it is one of the biggest flying beetles in Europe.
This is the season of the imagoes after years of development as a larva underground. We always find them in June in our garden in the evening, when they look for partners to mate.
I wanted to make an unusual shot, so I took one quickly indoors to show its “face”. It is actually a ventral look of the beetle showing the head, thorax and 2 front legs from under.
No need to travel far away for fantastic experience. Travel less, discover your backyard, reduce your ecological footprint!
